"Read Me"

Language barriers are a common challenge faced by newcomers—whether immigrants, refugees, or travellers—who do not share a common language with the people in their new environment. These barriers can create significant difficulties in day-to-day life, from navigating basic tasks like ordering food to more complex needs such as accessing healthcare or securing employment. However, newcomers often find innovative ways to overcome these challenges, especially by relying on non-verbal forms of communication, such as visual symbols, pictograms, drawing and writing, etc.

As an ESL instructor, I see these challenges on a daily basis and I asked some of my students to show me something they like me to remember about them and something which shows who they are. So, these pictures are taken of their hands no matter where they are coming from and what their background is, they are trying to show some precious things they carry everyday not to forget their life in the past. And as they still have trouble conveying their messages, they are showing something in their images to show their love, excitement and variety of feelings through their hands, accessories and objects they have.
